Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner attend the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The Met Gala is a hard event to get right when it comes to your style choices. Either you try and embody the concepts behind a fairly hard-to-embody theme or you try and do something interesting but not necessarily theme-specific, which gets you all kind of complaints that you didn’t stick to the theme.

For us, if you’re not attempting the theme, then you should at least attempt to wear something jaw-dropping and head-turning. We think that’s more or less what the Jenner girls did.

She’s serving up some 21stC Cher-in-Bob-Mackie realness and it really works for her. Look, we’ve seen her walk a ton of runways in person and she is easily the blandest “name” model currently working, but this look really adds some oomph to her basicness. It’s a little more “South Beach” than “Met Gala” for our tastes, but it’s a bold and eye-catching look, which is more than we expected from her.

We pretty much hate everything coming out of Balmain at the moment, especially the stuff designed with Kardashian/Jenners in mind. And truth be told, we don’t exactly love this dress on its own merits. The cutouts are too much and the sleeves are too long and heavy. But this is some serious HIGH IMPACT fashion. We’d rate this look miles ahead of Kim’s rather basic “robot girl” dress. And we like that her hair and face were kept relatively low-key and her accessories are practically invisible. It’s all about that eye-catching gown and her team rightly figured the focus should stay there. It’s a pretty great look for the Met Gala.
